Communicating with Physicians: For Librarians

Course description: Learn how to communicate more effectively with physicians. The overall goal is for librarians to understand the viewpoint of physicians during a library transaction and the ways the librarian can direct the interaction in a positive manner. The outcome of the course is that the librarian gains first-hand knowledge from a physician of what the physician's expectations are during a library transaction. (4 MLA CEUs)

Medical Library 2.0: The Social Web Made Easy and Useful

Course description: In two hours of classroom instruction, concepts like "Web 2.0", "Library 2.0", "Medicine/Health 2.0" and their associated buzzwords are demystified and explained. Social software like blogs, wikis, online collaboration tools and online social networks are described as they relate to and can be used in the work of health sciences librarians. Challenges posed by "Medicine 2.0" and "Health 2.0" are discussed. In two hours of hands-on instruction, participants learn how to set up and manage a feed aggregator (including finding, creating, and manipulating useful feeds) for personal and professional current awareness as well as how to set up and manage a del.icio.us account for sharing this awareness with colleagues or patrons in an efficient manner.
Educational Objective: Participants will gain the necessary vocabulary and skills to continue learning about Web technologies on a self-directed basis or in cooperation with colleagues. Students will depart course with working, populated Google Reader and del.icio.us accounts and an established network of colleagues with whom to share current awareness activites in both Google Reader and del.icio.us.

David was named one of Library Journal's "Movers and Shakers 2008". He is also the creator of Libworm, an RSS aggregator and search engine for library-related information.
